The silent language of couture on Hollywood’s most watched night

by Alexandra I. Mas

On the night of the Oscars, cinema meets another form of authorship: couture. The red carpet becomes a stage where actors speak without words, through fabric, jewels and gesture. This year, the house of Chanel writes several of those sentences.

Each appearance carries a fragment of the maison’s history — camellias, tweed, feathers, pearls — symbols Gabrielle Chanel once turned into a vocabulary of freedom.

Teyana Taylor arrives as a nominee for Best Supporting Actress, wrapped in a study of contrast.

Her long black and white chiffon dress is entirely embroidered with glass pearls and crystals, then crowned with black and white feathers. The silhouette moves between softness and structure, a quiet tension that mirrors the kind of roles now bringing Taylor into the Academy conversation.

Chanel shoes and makeup complete the look, but the dress carries the message: precision, movement, and a hint of theatre.

Nicole Kidman, long a Chanel ambassador, embodies the house’s most delicate register. Her powder-pink silk crêpe bustier gown is embroidered with white and grey crystals and black beads. A peplum trimmed with pale feathers — beige, pink, nude and apricot — creates a floating gradient that moves down the skirt.

The jewels speak in Chanel’s historic codes. The Endless Knot earrings in white gold with Japanese cultured pearls and diamonds, the Contraste Blanc ring with a 5.1-carat emerald-cut diamond, and the Tweed Brodé ring, a piece echoing the house’s legendary textile.

Pearls, tweed, camellias: the vocabulary of Gabrielle Chanel remains intact.

Maya Rudolph chooses drama through texture rather than color.

Her black silk crêpe dress is layered with chiffon ruffles embroidered with crystals, beads, malachite and feathers. It is a garment that moves as she moves, a subtle echo of the feather motif that Chanel introduced into high jewelry nearly a century ago.

Her jewels continue that lineage: the Diamant Evanescent ring, the Plume 1932 ring, and the Tweed Frangé earrings, all crafted in white gold and diamonds. These pieces recall the house’s long fascination with the feather, a symbol of lightness and independence.

The new masculine line

Pedro Pascal walks the carpet in a restrained but deliberate ensemble.

A white poplin tuxedo shirt with pearl buttons and a cotton piqué plastron is paired with black grain-de-poudre tuxedo trousers and belt. A silk and feather brooch interrupts the austerity, a small rebellion, very much in the spirit of Chanel.

His watch is the BOY·FRIEND Large model in beige gold with an alligator-pattern calfskin strap, a piece designed to blur the border between masculine and feminine codes. It is a fitting object for Pascal, whose public persona already moves between archetypes: hero, outsider, reluctant icon.

NICOLE KIDMAN, CHANEL Ambassador, will wear a CHANEL powder pink silk crepe bustier dress with a top embroidered with white, gray crystals and black beads, and a peplum adorned with light beige, pink, nude and apricot feathers. A gradient applique of feathers adorns the skirt. Jessie Buckley, the Academy Award winner, appears in a light pink bustier chiffon dress with a red satin stole, a look of classical simplicity. The true narrative lies in the necklace: the N°5 Drop necklace, crafted in white gold and diamonds, built around a 1.01-carat pear-shaped diamond. Its curved lines evoke the iconic bottle of Chanel N°5 and the falling drops of perfume.

She pairs it with the Jeanne ring and Bouton de Camélia earrings, both in white gold and diamonds, pieces rooted in two of Chanel’s deepest symbols: the camellia and the geometry of couture.

The deeper ritual

The Oscars remain a spectacle, but the real story unfolds in the details, a pearl button, a feather brooch, camellia cut in diamonds.

Cinema has always understood the power of costume. On screen, a dress becomes a character, a gesture, sometimes a destiny. On the red carpet, that same language leaves the fiction and enters life. The actor carries the role, but the designer writes the silhouette,  shaping the figure that the world will remember.

Nearly a century after Gabrielle Chanel dismantled the rigid codes of Parisian fashion, her house still moves easily between worlds: cinema and couture, masculine and feminine, discipline and fantasy.

Many may chase novelty. Chanel understands something older, that style, like myth, endures by repeating its symbols. Pearls. Camellias. Feathers. Each appearance another scene in a story still being written.
