New York thrives on legends, those who lived its nights, danced in its dens, and immortalized its pulse through art. Few have captured the essence of this city’s glamorous underground like Dustin Pittman. His exhibition Chasing Fashion’s Cutting Edge at the Soho Grand Gallery is both a tribute and a time machine, transporting us into the glimmering, unruly, fiercely stylish fabric of New York from the late 1960s to today.
Pittman is a witness, a participant, a chronicler of fashion’s restless energy. A New York kid who developed his photographic signature inside the city’s glittering vortex, he etched unforgettable portraits of the Velvet Underground, Andy Warhol’s muses, and Studio 54’s radiant regulars. His archive spans thousands of images weaving together fashion, music, art, socialites, and activism, published in W, Women’s Wear Daily, Vogue, The New York Times Style, Harper’s Bazaar, and Life Magazine.
The roster of names in Pittman’s lens reads like a roll call of cultural revolutions: Halston, Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, Vivienne Westwood, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Michael Kors, Betsey Johnson, Stephen Sprouse, Virgil Abloh, HBA, Telfar, The Blonds, alongside music icons from David Bowie, Iggy Pop, James Brown, Blondie, and the Ramones to the nocturnal tribes of Area, Palladium, Paradise Garage, and the Mudd Club.
What defines Pittman’s work is not just access but authenticity. His photographs are never staged trophies. They capture the vivid moment, giving his subjects the chance to “just be.” Each image breathes life into the fleeting, revealing personalities with tenderness and truth. His lens never objectifies; it liberates.
Activism runs through Pittman’s archive like an unbroken thread. From the Women’s Rights Movement of the 1970s to the very first Gay Liberation March in June 1970 — and nearly every Pride March since — he has been there as a participant with a camera, aligning himself with the causes and communities he documents.
Pittman calls it RAW YORK: a portrait of a city restless, elegant, gritty, and grand — uptown and downtown, night and day, forever alive. For over 50 years he has remained present, “posed & ready,” from the streets of New York to Paris, London, Milan, Tokyo, and beyond. His work is both archive and living testimony, a chronicle of the bonds forged within creative communities, and a reminder that culture is built not only in studios but in nightclubs, parades, and friendships.
Chasing Fashion’s Cutting Edge is an immersion into Pittman’s world — a celebration of community, creativity, and unfiltered truth.
