CHANEL — Imprimé Lion necklace

EXCELLENCE, Jewellery

The Architecture of Sovereignty

by Alexandra I. Mas

Within the new Signes & Symboles High Jewelry collection by CHANEL, the Imprimé Lion necklace emerges as a manifesto. It is the gravitational core of the collection, the place where Gabrielle Chanel’s symbolic language reaches its most monumental and resolved expression.

Creation, for Gabrielle Chanel, was intertwined with intuition, memory or mythology. Symbols formed a private cosmology through which she constructed both herself and the House that continues to bear her name. The Signes & Symboles collection revisits her favorite emblems. The lion, the star, the sun and the camellia continue to be coordinates and instruments of destiny.

The Imprimé Lion necklace is the only creation in the collection to unite all four of these defining CHANEL symbols within a single composition. Yet, the piece’s exceptional status resides not only in symbolism, but also in its very structure. The necklace possesses the authority of an object conceived architecturally.

Its dramatic V-shaped cascade is evoking the rigid geometries of ancient collars and sacred adornments. The composition is articulated through two strong angular lines forming a squared neckline reminiscent of antique dress constructions. There is something profoundly archaic in its silhouette: a memory of Byzantine regalia, Egyptian pectorals, imperial insignia. Yet the execution remains unmistakably contemporary.

The CHANEL Jewelry Creation Studio describes the necklace as operating through three visual movements: vertical, horizontal and radiant. This triadic structure is essential to understanding the piece. The verticality creates sovereignty. The eye is drawn downward through a controlled waterfall of diamonds toward the lion itself, crowned by an extraordinary 20.66 carat octagonal-cut sapphire whose dense and luminous blue becomes the emotional centre of the jewel. The stone governs the composition. Its chromatic gravity stabilises the entire structure like a celestial body anchoring an orbit.

Horizontality emerges through the disciplined repetition of emerald-cut diamonds, creating a weaving rhythm across the surface. CHANEL repeatedly invokes the idea of jewelry as fabric, and here the metaphor becomes nearly literal. Diamonds appear as a supple architectural mesh, suspended between white gold and nearly invisible pink gold articulations. The necklace behaves like a living structure moving with the body.

Then comes the radiant lion’s mane. Entirely set with baguette-cut diamonds, it unfolds like a sacred halo. The lion is sculpted in relief with remarkable force. Its gaze is sharp, almost watchful; its jaw pronounced; its volume imposing. CHANEL avoids sentimentality entirely, this is an emblem of vigilance and dominion.

The sapphire protecting the lion’s aura transforms the composition further. Blue has always occupied a singular place within CHANEL. The colour of depth, discipline and mystery. Here, it opposes the incandescent whiteness of diamonds and the delicate warmth of pink gold threads woven discreetly throughout the piece. The result is a chromatic equilibrium of extraordinary sophistication: severe yet luminous, opulent yet controlled.

Technically, the necklace also represents a feat of invisible engineering. Its flexibility relies upon a specially developed “chain within a chain” articulation system allowing the jewel to retain fluidity despite its monumental scale. The complexity extends to the integration of pink gold details so delicate that, at times, only the claws holding the stones reveal their presence. Such restraint is characteristic of the highest level of CHANEL High Jewelry: virtuosity concealed beneath apparent clarity.

Throughout the Signes & Symboles collection, CHANEL explores jewelry as symbolic architecture. The Imprimé Lion necklace occupies a singular position within this constellation, condensing Gabrielle Chanel’s mythology into a single object offering a ceremonial feeling about this masterpiece. The necklace imposes silence around itself. The Imprimé Lion achieves something rare: magnificence through meaning.
