“This book was in my head, and I went after it,” Anka says, recounting her collaboration with Chilly Gonzales. But Gonzales deeply disliked photography, viewing it as an artificial, almost torturous facade that clashed with his authentic nature. Ironically, it was this very contradiction that sparked a unique artistic synergy between the photographer and the musician.
“Sometimes, when I photograph someone, people will say, ‘Oh, this picture is so them.’ But no single photograph can ever truly encapsulate a person,” Anka reflects. “There are so many depths, angles, and layers to someone. Capturing that complexity is a nuanced and intricate art form. That’s why this book had to go beyond just single snapshots.”

Over five years, Anka followed Chilly Gonzales with her camera, documenting his stage performances, backstage moments, and unseen slices of his personal life. “When Chilly Gonzales asked me what I wanted to call the book, I said, ‘Gonzo.’ And your next album?” Anka recalls. “He looked at me and said, ‘Gonzo. Everyone’s been calling me that for years.’”
