Description

In this edition, I invite you to embark on a journey through a tapestry of artistic discoveries, weaving together the vibrant threads of Parisian craftsmanship with the bold strokes of international creativity. Our exploration begins with an unexpected encounter, as if plucked from a whimsical dream, where the Italian artisanal animator Domenico Balducci’s playful renditions of myself materialized on Instagram, bridging the gap between strangers through art. Balducci’s approach to creation is a delightful dance with his inner child, rooted in the pastoral landscapes of his Italian upbringing. His artistic alchemy transforms photographs and illustrations into enchanting collages, breathing life into cutouts with diverse materials, akin to a grown-up’s sophisticated game of paper dolls.

From the artisanal charm of Balducci, we glide seamlessly into the polished realm of Leslie Kee, a Japan based photographer whose crisp, elegant imagery pays homage to the legendary Richard Avedon, this issue’s luminary subject. My path crossed with Kee’s nearly a decade ago when his film “Les Independents,” a tribute to Yohji Yamamoto, graced my fashion film festival.
Our artistic odyssey then meanders back to the heart of French craftsmanship, where we encounter two extraordinary accessory designers sheltered under the protective wings of Fonds, an organization dedicated to preserving France’s rich artisanal heritage. Antonin Mongin, a textile virtuoso, pushes the boundaries of his craft by transforming hair, horsehair, sisal, and raffia into bespoke woven, knitted, and felted masterpieces. Alongside him, we find Chloe Valorso, a visionary young French designer whose work breathes new life into jewelry making. Valorso’s “Disco Materialism” is a harmonious fusion of the organic and the synthetic, where shamanic breathing techniques infuse her creations with a spiritual essence. Her multifaceted approach spans the realms of art, craftsmanship, research, and design, exploring the frontiers of new materialism and alternative belief systems.
